Thanksgiving number 56—I know, I’m an old man to some and a young pup to others. Can’t win on this one. However, whether one is just starting the climb of life or sliding towards its end (and everywhere in between), there is always much for which to be grateful. Family, friends, faith: These are the bulwarks of our life. Nothing should matter so much as to diminish these treasures. I believe that if a man has a good family, close friends, and a deep faith, life is worth living and honors God.
The whole idea of Thanksgiving Day seems to grow darker every year. When I was young, nothing was open, nothing. Today, for too many, it’s eat early and then rush off to a pre-black Friday event. Even a proper understanding of the reason for Thanksgiving Day is dulled by a revisionist educational system that finds a sour note of “colonialism” over a joyous heart, grateful for the risks of those early pilgrims that believed a new life could be explored (not exploited).
So, on this Thanksgiving Day be sure to give thanks to God for your family, your faith and your friends. Be grateful for the bounteous blessing of our great country. But, most importunately, thank God this day for a life blest and a future secure for having been faithful to Him—The Source of all blessings. Happy Thanksgiving!
