Presentation of the Lord

The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple by Mary and Joseph was the way all Jewish children were given to the Lord.  Similar to our Sacrament of Baptism, (but not at all the same), the idea of “presenting” to God our children so that they can live lives dedicated to God is a marvelous beginning on the journey of life.  The Sacrament of Baptism wipes away our original sin.  The Presentation sets the newborn heart on a path to the heart of God.  Baptism desires the same result.  We are claimed for God!  So, we take stock of the wonderful gift of our own baptism as we celebrate the Presentation of Jesus.  We have been claimed by Christ and have an indelible mark on our souls.  What a great way to get a start on life.  Consecration to the Lord is an essential marker on the path to Heaven.

Today, we also bless throats in honor of St. Blaise.  He is the patron saint for people with disease and cancer of the throat.  This blessing comes at a perfect time as many of us are afflicted with sore throats and colds.

We also have blessed candles for you.  The blessed candles should be a part of every Catholic home.  They are part of the Presentation of the Lord, that Light now conquers the darkness of this world.  Each home, when strife or darkness of troubles invade, should have these candles to dispel the darkness and demons that instigate disharmony.
