Pray for the sick.

This coming Saturday, February 11, is designated World Day of Prayer for the Sick.  Pope St. John Paul II instituted this day for the worldwide Church in 1992.  In his letter instituting this day he said, “This is a special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one’s suffering for the good of the Church, and of reminding us to see in our sick brother and sister the face of Christ, who, by suffering, dying and rising, achieved the salvation of mankind.”

This “special time of prayer” is not a simple pious activity.  It rests at the heart of our Christian Faith.  To pray for those who are sick and/or dying is a necessary part of our charity, our deep love for others.  Through suffering and dying, we enter into the mystery of Christ’s Passion.  Moreover, it allows us to  move beyond ourself into the heart of the other.  These prayers draw us away from selfishness into selflessness.  It is our Christian duty to sincerely offer up prayers for the sick—not only those whom we love, but, of those throughout the world.  A Christian on fire in prayer for those hurting and suffering, is a heart on fire for Christ.

Sometime this week (and beyond), pray for those for whom you promised to pray.  Pray generally for the needs of the world and particularly for those you know are hurting physically, mentally and spiritually.  Pray especially for those you promised prayers, but have forgotten.  We all need support and encouragement.  If we can’t rely on Christian love, then what’s the point?

Pray for me!  I do for you!
