November 29, 2020 1st Sunday of Advent

As we approach this Advent Season, we long with eager hearts for the coming of the Christ Child. In the cold, dark nights of winter the ever-brighter lights and festive spirit promise hope to a fallen world.

Through the Incarnation (God becoming Man) we discover the love of God and His never-ending care for his creation. "God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten into it, that we may have life." (Jn 3:16) The mystery of God's love is worth my meditation and discussion. Throughout these weeks of Advent, the Christian heart takes pause amongst the hustle and bustle, strengthened by God's Gift, His Son Jesus Christ, to help keep us focused on the real reason for this Season.

There are many ways by which a family, or you personally, can engage this Advent time. One way is to remember what the word "Advent" means - to await the coming of Jesus in the world. We await in prayer, Mass attendance, Confession before Christmas, and family prayer. A second way to appreciate this Season is to spend time reading the Infancy Narratives (first few chapters of the Gospel of Luke). Read the accounts of Mary, Joseph and Jesus. The struggles of the Holy Family can be a source of solace to our own families. A third way to celebrate Advent is to have a small Advent wreath in your home to light before you say Grace at meals. A fourth way to enjoy Advent is to consciously be kind as you shop or go out. Such kindnesses puts a visible face on our Christianity. A final way to live the Advent Season is through a generous heart both to your parish and the many charities in need this season.

Charity is love all year, but Advent seems a particularly good time to highlight our Christian Faith. These Corporal Works of Mercy demonstrate that Christianity is not just a book of words, but a way of life and living.

I pray for you and your families that as the Advent Season unfolds, that your hearts will be eager and ready to embrace the Christ Child, the real reason for this season.
