The annual celebration of Father's Day is upon us and a reminder of what it means provides hope.
My father was not the best at what he did, for alcohol debilitated much of his potential. He was great at wood-working and building furniture. This gift was overshadowed by a sickness which blinded others to his gift. I always wonder how much more he could have accomplished for us if he hadn't been burdened so.
Fatherhood is an amazing role, both physically and spiritually. As your spiritual father, disciplining in the faith is always a challenge, for it requires both love and firmness. Fatherhood requires the same. Trying to help raise a family, being strong for them, providing for their needs and developing good character founded on dignity and love, is quite a responsibility. We need strong fathers who are faithful, loving and prayerful. This kind of a father makes all the difference.
Today we honor all of our fathers and lift them up to Christ for strength and love to always be a consistent witness. Thank you, fathers, for all you do. May you always be a blessing to your family, and to our Church.
