Charity in Action

One of the signs of an active community of believers is the measure of charity we give on a regular basis.  Over the holidays we are very generous to many people.  But, charity is a way of living that extends through the year.  Therefore, as a parish family we will be doing two new things starting with this month:

1) Monthly Tithe:  Tithing is a biblical command that a portion of what we make should go back to the Lord in various ways.  Ten percent (10%) is the goal we should strive for, individually.  As in all my previous parishes, it’s time for our parish as a whole to “tithe” our monthly collection to different groups that share the value of helping others.  Therefore, at the conclusion of each month, St. Joseph’s will give one percent (1%) of its monthly collection to various groups.  This is a great witness to put into action what is taught—to be a cheerful giver.  This will be reflected in the bulletin each month.

2) Reverse Collection:  The Food Pantry of Richmond is always in need of food and other items.  To help on a monthly basis, starting in February, we will have a reverse collection.  When the offertory basket is passed on, when you put your contribution in, or as the basket passes you, reach in and take a piece of paper which will have a specific food product or item of need for the Food Pantry.  After you go shopping that week, you bring the food or product back to church to put in the food collection basket in the back of church.

As we grow in our Faith, these are two ways that we, the Body of Christ, can do to put our charity into action.  As always, thank you for your generosity!  God bless St. Joseph Church.
