For over 45 years we have taken notice of the moral problem of abortion and abortion on demand. There are those Christians who have been hood-winked by the illogical clamor that abortion is a political issue, therefore, the priest shouldn’t preach about it from the pulpit as this is politics. When did we lose the battle over moral issues, giving way to an illogical, secular view that “Thou shalt not kill” is about politics, not morality? I’m sure that God weeps at the many ways Christians perform moral gymnastics so as not to see our responsibility regarding the destruction of life in the mother’s womb. I can understand the pagan cultures abdication of truth. But, when a Godly person embraces the seductions of culture, I am, frankly, dismayed and astonished. Has our belief in God and His authority of moral law evaporated so much from the heart of Christianity that we now justify killing unborn babies under the guise of politics instead of God’s commandment “Thou shall not kill”?
When we (the Body of Christ, the Church, Christians) talk about being pro-life, we approach it in an all encompassing proposition. We see the need to oppose all forms of actions that hurt the human person. However, there is also a hierarchy of crimes against humanity, not an equalization. All crimes that fall under the pro-life banner are not equitable. For example, immigration is not equal to murder, nor is capital punishment equal to abortion. All can be very destructive, for various reasons. But, not all are as severe as others. Murder of a child in the womb, that has a soul given to them by God, which is innocent and venerable is not the same as executing a violent criminal who kills one or many people. He/she is not innocent, they are not vulnerable, and have been found guilty—not so the baby in the womb (not fetus).
We also hear from “enlightened Catholics” that if the baby is an inconvenience, or will complicate the girl’s future hopes and dreams, or it was a mistake...these are all viable reasons to abort the child. Enlightenment requires an embrace of the truth, not a denial of responsibility. Perhaps parents serve their children best when they embrace life, adoption or responsibility for actions. I know, I know, they say, “The Church needs to be real”! Killing is about as real as it gets, not to mention, final.
So, we Christians know the truth. To be pro-life is to mirror God’s desire for us. The law sets people free. Responsibility accepts the consequence. Good moral teaching sets boundaries. Let’s be pro-life. Let’s support those who choose to keep their baby. Let’s stand opposed to the ignorance of the current culture. How many more years must go by before we can recognize what we always believed—the baby in the womb is life, and only God gives and only God takes away.
